May 2005

  • An influx into the NYKT yahoo group (Eric Bluntzer is the moderator and set it up). Because of this, I have a lot of alumni news to report this month. Basically, everybody seems much more successful than I am. I hope I didn’t miss anybody.
  • Mufasa, the House mascot, died recently. Check out the Living History page for a eulogy from Michael Nerenburg.
  • John Reffner provides the superficial info, in his own words. He’ll tell you more over a beer: “Here is a thumbnail of what we are up to:
    • Brenda still puts up with me. Sometimes.
    • Years of ‘deferred’ maintenance at our place in the Philly ‘burbs has left me with the perfect homestead – Nobody else wants it and Brenda doesn’t expect much from me.
    • I watch paint dry. No, not as a hobby, that would be silly. People pay me to watch paint dry. I take pictures. I post them on the company intranet. Yes, they still pay me. Sometimes I even take pictures of black specs in plastic or ink on paper or broken wafers or hair. You might say I’m eclectic. I won’t mention the company because you might stop buying Rohm and Haas stock.
    • Two kids share my last name. Not much else. Too young to blame me for all that’s wrong in their lives, old enough I probably am responsible for all that is or will be wrong. Fortunately the girl(11) looks like Brenda. Fortunately the boy(7) has a good personality. I’ll let you read into that what you want.
    • I sail a boat with my dad that looks a lot like a refrigerator, only less sea worthy. The boat is big enough to have a small cabin.
  • Erwin Stephen Howard (aka R.T. or Artie) checked in: “I’m doing good; My oldest daughter (Dani) is 16 and just got her driver’s permit. My younger daughter, Kelsey, turns 14 next week, and my son Jamie is 4… I’m a Software Engineer for Lockheed Martin, and the lead SW Engineer for a line of Radar systems.”
  • From Bill Welch: “My wife Amy and I are raising our two children Hannah, 6 and Will, 5 in NH. We bought a run down farm in my home town and are fixing it up. (poor Will looks like my mini-me.. we’ve been accused of cloning more than once ;)”
  • Dan Zuckerman reports the following: “I live in Joisey with my wife Allison and a foster baby, Alexis, 9 months old. I’m a tech manager at AT&T Labs and now have been there for 20 years, just reached that milestone. I’m responsible for network management systems development.”
  • Phil Bossy has been living in Connecticut since he graduated. He has three boys ages 14, 10 and 7 and is doing IT management at Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
  • Barry Regan explains every detail of his life, except what EMC stands for:
    • “I have been working at EMC for the last 5 years. I got in just before the crash so while I work with many ex-millionaires, I am not one. I dodged a whole bunch of layoffs while earning my MBA on their dime. Since the turn around I have have been doing a lot of travelling for outsourcing projects. Mostly to Mexico but last summer start me on the China Route. Luckily I have only had to do that trip once but I think more trips are coming. In fact I just got back from Mexico and stayed home to work on a project I promised Caroline I would do and to get some sleep.
    • In the next two months I think I am going to Mexico, Ireland, and Wisconsin. China is a strange place. Their favorite restaurant is Kentucky Fried Chicken. They like it so much their second favorite restaurant is a KFC Knockoff. Instead of the Colonel, they have a picture of Mao Tse Tung. Very strange place.
    • Anyway, since I got my MBA I figured I ought to do omething with it and I interviewed for and am in the process of transitioning to a commercial role in the Supply Base group. I won’t be an Engineer anymore! Of course red tape is holding that up they tell me it’ss a cost issue but let’s face it, I don’t make all that much that it should be a consideration. :)”
  • David Rubin’s company is looking to hire a ColdFusion/Java guru in Florida. His daughter Kayla is going to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah in Sept. this year.
  • Steve Bossy doesn’t work in Brooklyn as I reported earlier. He works in the Bronx, at Yankee Stadium. In fact, Steve has as almost as many runs batted in as Jason Giambi.
  • Alumni weekend 2005 was very successful and lots of fun, despite the poor weather. The restaurant in North Troy was one of the best restaurants we’ve chosen for alumni weekend. The turnout was excellent and many different NYKT eras were represented.
  • The Red Sox fans won the wiffleball challenge 4-3. I gave up all 4 runs on lucky, wind-blown homeruns. So, it’s mostly my fault. The alumni lost the hockey game 11-4. That was mostly my fault, too, because I was the second-worst player. The worst player was Mark “Boom Boom” Zakrzewski from Los Angeles, who is the winner of the Shin Ozemi award for traveling the furthest distance to attend alumni weekend.
  • Thanks to everyone who helped set it up, to everyone who attended, and to everyone who donated money to the Kappa Tau alumni fund.
  • Ryan Tyler brought his fiancee, Rebecca, to alumni weekend.
  • Pete Michels is being groomed to be the new advisor. Thanks to Zach Piech for doing a great job as advisor.
