Alumni Weekend 2007
April 20 - 22
Alumni SecretaryLet me first apologize for the lateness of this newsletter. If you have received this in error or would like to be removed from future mailings, please respond and I will resolve the situation. If you have recently moved, please feel free to reply with updated contact information. We have been working very hard over the last few weeks to finalize this year’s Alumni Weekend. All of our hard work has finally paid off as we have what looks to be an exciting time in good old Troy the weekend of April 20 – 22.We will start out the weekend with our annual Alumni vs. Active hockey game at the Knickerbocker Arena in North Troy. We have the ice starting at 10 PM, so bring your skates and be ready for some fun. Afterwards, we will surely be heading out on the town for some post game celebration. On Saturday, we will be having a BBQ at the house. This plans to kick off sometime around 1:00. It’s a great time to come out and meet the active brothers or catch up with those alumni you haven’t seen in quite some time.
For this year’s Alumni Dinner we have something very special planned. We have booked our own deck for a dinner cruise with the JP Cruise lines in Troy. Boarding will start at 7:00 PM with our 3 hour tour shoving off at 7:30 PM. The cost will be $60 per alumni and $36 per date.
Directions to all the events will be available at the house prior to the events. If you would like more information in advance, feel free to email me at patrick.dicaprio@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing you all up in Troy.
Fraternally Yours,
Patrick DiCaprio

Greetings my fellow NYKT fraters,
My name is Steven Chapman and I am the Rex for this coming year. I am a junior mechanical engineering student, originally from Watertown, CT.
Everything is running smoothly at good ole 300 Pawling Ave. We are proud to announce the initiation of our eleven newest brothers. The brotherhood is now at 44 actives, and we look forward to making this number even larger with a strong fall rush.
In the midst of the new policies that may be put on the Greek community by the administration, the awards of excellence have a new twist. In addition to the awards of excellence, a five star rating system is going to matched up to each chapter on campus. These ratings will be available to incoming students and their parents during their student orientation over the summer. With the good standing that we have on campus, we will strive to attain the full five stars.
We still have an active role in the community. In the fall the PR Chair coordinated a comedian from www.collegehumor.com to come to RPI and put on a show. The event was very successful, especially considering the fact that it was the first time ever doing this. We raised a few hundred dollars that went off to the March of Dimes. The PR chair for this semester is in the middle of planning the annual Ms. RPI. Unfortunately I think RPI has run out of girls, so he may be outsourcing to the neighboring schools for contestants.
The past exec has instituted a new minor position, although its role is not minor at all. The Brotherhood Chair is responsible for organizing trips out of the house for the entire brotherhood to hang out together, and possibly gain some of the sanity back that is lost on campus. Last semester, a trip to a local corn maze was organized and this semester a paintball game is in the works.
Fraternally,
Steven Chapman

ArchonHello Brothers,My name is Trevor Sherwood, and I am the new NYKT Archon for 2007. I am originally from Barrington, NH and I am a junior studying Chemistry.Fall RUSH was as exciting as ever this year with new events like a trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY and a visit to Ommegang Brewery. Roof Toss was moved to the second weekend of RUSH to join Jell-O wrestling. This put our two strongest events on the same weekend that every other house on campus holds its biggest events. The strategy proved effective as eleven new brothers were initiated who are all eager to help NYKT continue to thrive.Spring RUSH brought out the friends of our new brothers, but sadly, there were not enough interested to have a Spring pledge class. One rushee did sign his bid, however, and he has chosen to wait and pledge in the Fall. He will be invited to participate in Brotherhood events, which should keep his desire to be a Pi Lam alive.
Looking forward to Fall RUSH, I am working on some new events and plan to keep many of the successful mainstays in place. Everyone loves Jell-O Wrestling and the Roof Toss, and those will undoubtedly be our most popular events again this year. As far as new events, I am looking into going to a baseball game or the Big E as an alternative to Turning Stone. If any of you are ever free during RUSH, I invite you to join us at any of our events.
Fraternally,
Trevor Sherwood

KOEBrothers,My name is Robert Thistle and I am current Keeper of the Exchequer of the NYKT chapter. Originally from Wakefield Massachusetts, I have made Troy my home away from home, opting even to live here during the summers. I am a sophomore majoring in Biology and welcome the challenges and responsibilities of overseeing our chapter’s finances. As current K.O.E. of the NYKT chapter, I have attempted to solve several issues. Primarily, our steward budget needed to be adjusted such that both brothers living in and out of the house were contributing finances proportionately. In previous times, a lack of food created problems. However, the increased budget and the redistribution of house bills have offered much relief and success. Moreover, this and other adjustments were made without raising house bills from last semester, to general approval. As we have recently initiated eleven new members, up from last year, our financial status for the future looks to be as clean and tight as it has been in the past. We expect to be living at or near full capacity come fall which should ensure lower bills and a higher reinvestment surplus. Although we are temporarily focused on assessing and fixing our house’s boiler at the best price, I have several ideas for any surplus we may procure. In addition, I would like to work on converting as much of the billing process our chapter has to internet supporting systems.

Robert Thistle

MarshalBrothers,My name is Jacob Oldenburger, I am a junior Civil Engineering major. I am the current Marshal of Pi Lambda Phi NYKT.During last years work week our previous Marshal kept us very busy. The entire inside of the house was repainted. The pantry shelves got a bright orange paint as to wake the brothers up every morning trying to make breakfast. The second floor hallway was cleaned up with some crown molding to cover all the network cables that are running around the house. The first floor got some new additions in the form of a brand new pool table and an ice machine in the pantry. The old window behind the dryer on the dance floor has finally been removed and bricked up to prevent further cracking of the foundation. The tower has been painted gold with some large purple letters which are now illuminated at night for neighborhood to see. This past fall a few brothers ripped up the carpet on the second floor and we replaced it with commercial carpet tiles. This will allow for longer life span and easier maintenance. As of right now our boiler is leaking. It has reached its time of replacement. We are currently looking for companies to tackle this large task soon so that we won’t lose heat and hot water in the house during this winter. The rest of the house is great condition. As for this up coming work week I have lots planned, especially outdoors. The biggest project is to return the sewer into a bedroom. Due to the size of our brotherhood more brothers want to live in. In addition to this the DJ booth is slowly getting converter from a purely hockey closet back to its intended purpose. We have hooked up some lights in the dance floor and plan on hooking them in to new music system. Also, I have plans to re-gravel and seal the driveway as usual. Another task I want to accomplish is replacing and or resurfacing the side porch around the house. The paint on most of the boards are peeling and chipping away. I also plan on finishing what I started 2 years ago by rewiring the volleyball court lights by including the wiffleball field.
Besides my plans for the future the usual routine maintenance and inspections are taking place now throughout the house to keep everything in check and safe. If anyone has any questions or suggestions feel free to contact me.
Fraternally,
Jacob Oldenburger

In other news, during the past summer I had the opportunity to attend Pi Lambda Phi’s International Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. New York Kappa Tau had great showing of three actives and the ever-present Karl. It proved to be not only a enjoyable experience for all, but a successful one for NYKT, taking home many awards including financial, recruitment, rush, and new member education to name a few. In addition, Dan Scott was named the new president the International Executive Council.
In conclusion the entire active brotherhood is anxiously waiting to see you and meet your family this Alumni Weekend. If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to contact me at kopper@rpi.edu
